About me

I earned my Ph. D. in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina, and I completed my internship at the Bay Pines Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Petersburg, FL.  My educational background includes an intensive study of the biological, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of human functioning along with an understanding of how these aspects interact to influence how we think, feel, and behave.  I am trained and have extensive experience in delivering various forms of psychotherapy as well as in conducting psychological assessment, evaluation, and diagnosis. I have had the honor and privilege to serve people in Florence, Italy, since 2006.

My in-depth training as a clinical psychologist has prepared me to provide effective treatments for a wide range of difficulties. With a special interest in, and dedication to, trauma work, I also enjoy helping people with a full array of issues, including adjustment difficulties, anxiety, depression, stress-related problems, attention difficulties, substance use, and body image.

Core Beliefs

My belief is that we all are resilient – that we all have within ourselves the strengths and ability to alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that limit us from expressing our true potential.  Sometimes, however, when we are faced with difficult challenges, we lose touch with our own resiliency.  Therapy can assist people in connecting with theirnatural capacity for transformation and growth and in building tools that they can use to overcome obstacles that hinder them from experiencing satisfaction, happiness, and a more fulfilling life.

Partnership in Practice

My approach to psychotherapy is to develop an active partnership between client and therapist.

Here’s how it works:  Our first few sessions will give me an opportunity to get to know you as a person. We will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and what you want to achieve through our collaboration.  The information you share will enable me to guide you toward understanding your situation with greater clarity.

As we progress, you will learn techniques for better problem-solving, communication, emotional regulation, and emotional wellbeing. A key component of this process is your incorporation of these skills into your daily life.  In other words, my role is to help you move from insight and understanding to action. The purpose is for you to see and feel positive changes as you put your knowledge into practice.

With mutual hard work and dedication to reaching your goals, our therapy journey can become a powerful force for change and improvement in your life.

Getting Started

Initial Session
I typically set aside 60 to 90 minutes for our first session. This will allow us to:

  • talk about your main concerns and what you hope achieve in therapy
  • help you decide whether you feel comfortable working with me
  • determine whether my services are appropriate for addressing your issues
  • discuss how the therapy process works and how long it might take
